This week, Google announced that it is gradually rolling out AI Overview-related data to a subset of Search Console users, including: the number of impressions when a query triggers an AI Overview, the number of clicks when a site is cited within an AI Overview, and the AI Overview click-through rate (with comparison data against traditional blue links). This marks the first time Google has allowed site owners to quantitatively track the traffic generated by AI Overviews, making it an important data milestone for GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) practitioners. Feedback from early users shows that, for queries triggering an AI Overview, the click-through rate of traditional organic results dropped by an average of 22%, while sources cited directly in the AI Overview actually gained additional referral traffic. The feature is expected to roll out to all GSC users within the next 3 to 6 months. The SEO community has reacted positively, viewing this as a development that will push more teams to incorporate GEO metrics into their day-to-day monitoring systems.
