Google AI Overview Goes Mainstream: Which Sites Win and Which Lose

The Current State of AI Overview Coverage

By early 2026, Google's AI Overview had expanded to multiple language markets, including Chinese. In search results that contain an AI Overview, the click-through rate of the first organic result dropped from roughly 28% to around 15%, while the click-through rate on the "more links" within the AI Overview itself sits at around 5% to 8%.

Types of Websites That Benefit

Websites that appear directly in the source area of an AI Overview gain brand exposure on par with a featured snippet. These sites typically possess strong E-E-A-T signals and high-quality, structured content.

Commercial and transactional content sites are affected less. AI Overview currently has relatively low coverage of commercial and transactional queries (purchasing, price comparison), so e-commerce sites and SaaS product pages take a limited hit.

For highly specialized vertical niches, AI Overview coverage is low, and traditional organic results still dominate.

Types of Websites That Suffer

Encyclopedic and informational sites are hit the hardest. For informational queries like "what is X" or "the definition of X," AI Overview delivers the answer directly, so users no longer need to click through to the source.

Sites that rely on traffic from "best XXX" listicles: AI Overview generates its own list, and although it may cite your content, users are less inclined to click.

Response Strategies

Strategy 1: Work to become an AI Overview source Strengthen your E-E-A-T signals (author authority, content originality), use FAQ Schema to make your content easier for AI to extract, and ensure your content is technically accessible (not dependent on JS rendering).

Strategy 2: Shift toward commercial-intent content Move your traffic focus from purely informational content toward content with commercial intent: product comparisons, tool reviews, and buying guides. AI Overview coverage of this type of content is relatively low.

Strategy 3: Build branded search traffic Branded-keyword searches are not affected by AI Overview. Through content marketing and brand building, get more users to search for your brand name directly, reducing your dependence on traffic from generic keywords.

Strategy 4: Diversify your traffic sources You can't rely on Google organic search alone. Start building owned traffic channels such as email subscriptions, social media, and a newsletter to reduce your dependence on a single search engine.
