Is Free Keyword Research Actually Feasible?
Many people assume that keyword research has to rely on paid tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush. That's a misconception. Google's official free tools, combined with a few excellent free platforms, are more than enough to support the keyword research needs of small and medium-sized websites.
Tool 1: Google Keyword Planner
Source: Provided free by Google Ads (requires a Google account, but you don't need to run any ads)
Step-by-step:
- Go to Google Ads → Tools → Keyword Planner
- Choose "Discover new keywords"
- Enter a seed keyword (such as "SEO tools")
- Filter by region and language
- Export the results to Excel for analysis
Tool 2: AnswerThePublic (Visual Question Mining)
Core use case: Expanding a seed keyword into a complete list of the actual questions users are asking (Who/What/When/Where/Why/How). It's a powerful tool for uncovering long-tail keywords.
Tool 3: Google Trends (Trend Validation)
- Verify whether a keyword is on an upward trend (worth writing about) or a downward trend (best avoided)
- Discover seasonal fluctuation patterns
- Compare the relative popularity of multiple keywords
Tool 4: Google Search's Built-in Features (Often Overlooked)
- Search box autocomplete: Type a keyword prefix and see Google's suggestions
- Related searches at the bottom of the results page: The 8 related terms shown below each search page
- People Also Ask (PAA): Real questions from your target audience
